On April 25 at 19:00, Baltic Analog Lab and festival Skaņu Mežs invite you for two sound performances by current artists-in-residence, Erik Alalooga (EST) and Lai Tsung-Yun (TW).
Erik Alalooga is a performance director, performer, sound artist, teacher and cultural manager living in Tallinn, Estonia. He is mostly known by exploration and application of DIY analog-technological solutions in his artworks. Since 2005 his focus has been on immediate relationships between human and machine. His music can be described as psychedelic noise, pseudoshamanism, neo-industrial, using weird mechanical instruments. At the event he will present his latest project. During three weeks in BAL he has been working on new tracks. First time during his 10 years long experimental music “career” he has separated his performance into three different tracks with titles and stuff. So far he has always performed one complete piece, but now some developments have been made. New pieces “Curse upon Electricity”, “The Boreal Desert” and one without title yet will have their world premiere in BAL.
Lai Tsung‑Yun is a Taiwanese sound and media artist whose work investigates the relationships between sound, perception, and space. Using modular synthesis, algorithmic systems, field recordings, and real‑time processing, his works move between concert, installation, and situational performance, often in collaboration with musicians, choreographers, and media artists. Since 2013, Lai has curated the Lacking Sound Festival, Taiwan’s longest‑running experimental sound platform, producing cross‑disciplinary programs, international exchanges, and workshops connecting Asia and Europe. During his residency in Riga, he has been experimenting with the Erica Synths synthesizers at BAL and exploring how they can be incorporated into his existing live setup. He has also spent time discovering parts of Riga’s experimental music scene, which has enriched his understanding of the local music culture and inspired new possibilities for future dialogue and collaboration.
Since last year, Skaņu Mežs is is collaborating with Baltic Analog Lab on a joint artist residency program, hosting artists from around the world each month.BAL is an artist collective in Riga, founded in 2016, dedicated to research and promotion of analog film and photography techniques. The lab organizes film screenings, workshops, lectures, interdisciplinary audiovisual art events, as well as the international experimental film festival Process.
