Free jazz workshop by Stephen Gauci, Adam Lane and Kevin Shea (USA)

Organized by Skaņu Mežs festival for adventurous music in collaboration with Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, State Culture Capital Foundation and Trust for Mutual Understanding.

September 6, 12:00, Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, room nr. 328.

Having performed weekly since 2017 as the house band at Brooklyn’s legendary Bushwick Series, and Main Drag Series; and having only ever performed in front of a live audience (no rehearsals ever!), this group brings a deeply developed syntax, time and phrasing concept that can only happen on stage, over hundreds of performances. With only a few notable jazz/improvising trios having found themselves in this rarified space (George Garzone’s “The Fringe” comes to mind), Gauci/Lane/Shea are poised to expand the realm of the classic saxophone improvising trio to ever new and exciting areas of exploration.

This educational event will feature elements of both an artist talk and a workshop. After a musical presentation, the players will talk about some of the musical concepts that go into the improvised “performance”, such as “motif”, and “motific development”, “phrasing”, and how it relates to time concept, and “improvisational stream of consciousness”.

Workshop is open both to music listeners and musicians – musicians are invited to bring their own instruments, as they will be invited to either:

a) perform a short improvisation with other musician attendees.

or

b) perform a short improvisation with the trio (Gauci/Lane/Shea), if there are not enough attendees to form a small “group”.

Afterwards, the musicians will open up a discussion regarding the short performance, using this as a matrix to discuss the musical concepts stated above, as well as any other questions from attendees.

Admission is free.
